Silence is not an option.

Since the beginning of the current administration we have seen an assault on the values that we as Americans hold most dear. Truth has been sidestepped in favor of alternative facts. Civil rights have come under attack and our leaders marginalized.

On January 27, 2017, a day to remember, the President of the United States of America issued an executive order that barred the people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States. Among these people are families, children, scientists, doctors, those who have put their lives on the line to assist our causes abroad, and refugees seeking safety and an opportunity to live in peace.

It's easy to stand by and watch the events unfold silently without action.

Silence has a cost.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Pastor Martin Niemöller

Silence is not an option.

A nation birthed by and raised on the backs of immigrants cannot stand idly by while those who wish to make our nation stronger are turned away.

To treat as strangers these law-abiding immigrants threatens the democratic principles this nation stands for.

Our American values have been compromised.

Throughout history people have looked to the United States of America as beacon of hope, of peace, and of prosperity. Of truth and democracy. They look to us for help in the most desperate of hours. A bright light in the midst of darkness.

There will be those who attempt to snuff out that light, but together we are stronger. Together we will fan the flames of truth, equality, inclusion, and hope so that it burns brighter than any amount of hatred ever could.

We stand together in opposition to the Trump administration’s assault on human rights, truth, and decency.

We stand for diversity and understand that immigrants made, and continue to make, this country great.

We stand for truth and understand that science and data should inform policy at all levels.

We stand for decency and understand that all people, regardless of gender, national origin, sexual orientation or race, deserve the equality, dignity and opportunity that America stands for.

Diversity of race, orientation, gender, and religious background is what makes this country great. It's what makes us strong. We will not join this wave of hatred that will only make us less secure.

It's time to speak up. Join us. Email speakup@silenceisnotanoption.com to add your name to the list.
